This past weekend the Prairie Baseball Academy hosted its first ever high school showcase tournament. With two beautifully maintained baseball facilities Lethbridge showed off why it is such an amazing place for baseball right now. Lloyd Nolan Yard and Spitz Stadium were in beautiful green condition for the tournament, and the response from the players and coaches was fantastic. After a less than stellar weather day to start the tournament on Friday the weekend brought clearer skies. Sunday’s final took place under clear blue skies and there was just the slightest breeze. The Vauxhall Jets won that final game, and put an exclamation mark on a truly impressive tournament.
With a 9-1 win over the Prairie Baseball Academy Junior Varsity team in the Sunday afternoon final the Jets completed a perfect tournament with a 5-0 record. In those 5 games the Jets surrendered only 3 runs. Their pitching staff was dominant all weekend, and two impressive performances on the bump by Josh Burgman in the semi-final and Carson Perkins in the final sealed the run of the table for the always powerful Jets. Congratulations to the Vauxhall Jets on being the 2016 Spring Showcase Tournament Champions.
The University of Lethbridge and the Lethbridge College proudly sponsored the weekend event. With the help of the two post-secondary institutions the players were all given tours of both campuses. Parents and family members were permitted to join, and the response from those who went was great. Both the UofL and LC did a tremendous job in accommodating everyone who came down for the tournament. As well as the tours each institution sponsored a dinner for all players and coaches. On Friday night there was a BBQ with burgers and fries during the PBA JV game. The JV boys took home a 7-2 victory in the feature game to start the tournament 2-0. On Saturday night there was a delicious spaghetti dinner for all participants. During the dinner the PBA Varsity took on the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute in CCBC Conference play. The Varsity team impressively took care of VIBI 10-0 while some of the high school players from the tournament looked on.
The tournament could not have been a success without the help of so many great staff and volunteers. There were some long day and early mornings, but the success of this tournament should pave the way for more similar tournaments in the future. Lethbridge is a perfect location to host a tournament with two beautiful fields located so close together.
Thank you to everyone who had a hand in putting this tournament on. Thank you to all of the players, coaches and spectators who helped make this tournament a great success.
