The Prairie Baseball Academy kicked off their 2017 spring season with a 7-6 win over the Northeastern Junior College Plainsman on Friday night in Las Vegas. Thursday the boys left Lethbridge bright and early and traveled over 1400km to Fillmore, Utah. The plan was to finish the trip to Las Vegas Friday morning with some time to relax before the game. Instead the PBA bus had a transmission issue, and the boys were forced to drive the final leg of the trip in two vans. Nevertheless the change in travel plans did not effect PBA starter Tanner Dalton. Dalton was outstanding over 5 innings of work considering the circumstances. The sophomore right-handed pitcher did not surrender a run, while giving up 5 hits and striking out 6 Plainsman hitters. Dalton will be a key pitcher atop the PBA rotation this season and he showed why on Friday night pumping the zone with strikes while navigating his way through a left-hand dominant lineup.
Dalton left the game with a 6-0 lead in the 5th thanks to some good hitting and poor defense by the Plainsman. Considering Friday night was the first time the PBA players had seen live pitching outdoors this spring the hitting was great. The team only recorded 8 hits, but they made some loud outs, and took four hit by pitches in two strike counts. Sophomore, Brett Semeniuk was 2-4 with 2 runs and an RBI on the night. Freshman David Leblanc was 2-3 and Eric Davies had 2 RBI’s hitting out of the nine hole for PBA.
The biggest issue for PBA was the bullpen on Friday night. You could tell there were some nerves from the young group of pitchers. After Dalton left the game 4 relievers combined to walk 8 batters and surrender the 6-0 lead. Freshman Liam Sabiston got PBA out of a jam in the 8th and finished off the 9th to earn his first win with the program.
As of writing this article PBA was waiting to hear about their Saturday scheduled games. Unfortunately it has been raining most of the morning, and the games may have to be pushed until tomorrow.
Stay tuned for more updates on the PBA spring Las Vegas trip.
