We are only 6 days away from the start of a brand new baseball season at the Prairie Baseball Academy. The Varsity team cannot wait to get out of this Alberta weather and practicing inside, for the sunny skies of Las Vegas. This team has the task of trying to capture the program’s 8th straight CCBC Championship in May, and it will not be easy. Every team in the CCBC will be gunning to take PBA down. The journey to make sure that doesn’t happen starts next week with a very difficult schedule on the opening trip. To see the 2018 Varsity schedule please click here.
The 2018 version of the Varsity team will feature a mix of veteran players along with a heavy dose of freshman talent. The pitching staff will be anchored by a trio of returning players: Scott Gillespie, Liam Sabiston and Kai Poffenroth. All three were bullpen arms last season, so Coach Hubka expects them to step into the starting rolls this year and compete. The pitching staff is normally a strength in the program, and if the PBA expects to win early, they will need the frontline starters to get them through the first half of games. Coach Hubka will use the opening trip to evaluate his freshman arms and see who is ready to step into the key roles for the 2018 season.
On the offensive side of the ball, the lineup will feature three key sophomores in the outfield. David Leblanc, Eric Davies and Dalton Wells will be relied upon early to produce runs for a lineup with a lot to prove. Tyson Abbott will return behind the plate in Coach Hubka’s lineup, and will have to quarterback what looks to be an all freshman infield. It is exciting to see a new group of PBA players take over, and those players will be thrown into the fire with 13 games scheduled on the opening trip.
PBA will open up in Salt Lake City on Feb 14th and continue on to Las Vegas where they will take on some of the top teams in the Scenic West Conference. You can follow all of the games live on Pointstreak here. Good luck boys! Go show them that us Northerners know a little bit about this great game!
