The PBA Varsity team returned home Sunday evening after a long bus trip back from Las Vegas. Fortunately the boys were able to salvage a split in their four-game series against Colorado Northern Community College, Friday and Saturday. There were some outstanding performances during the series, which gives the coaching staff optimism heading forward. Unfortunately this upcoming weekends series in Washington has been cancelled. With a scheduled off-weekend March 8/9 it is going to be a while until the boys can get back out on the field.
After dropping the first game of their four game series against CNCC, the boys bounced back with a decisive first win of the season. The win was propelled by a an absolute gem on the mound by Cal Tecklenburg. The former infielder, turned pitcher threw six no-hit innings for PBA, including 8 strikeouts and only two walks. Coach Hubka called on Rylan Zens to finish the game, and he had only one out to get before surrendering a double to lose the combined no-hit bid. After a hit by pitch and an error, Zens was able to collect the final out and secure the 8-0 shutout. Offensively the middle of the PBA lineup was outstanding. Torrin Vaselenak, Ryan Gaab and Tyler Arnold combined to go 7-11 with 6 runs scored and 5 rbi’s in the game including Vaselenaks’ 3rd home run of the road trip. Saturday looked very similar to Friday. PBA dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 before exploding for a 9-1 victory to complete the split of the weekend. Ethan Kano-McGregor was just as impressive as Tecklenburg the day before him. McGregor threw the complete game, surrendering only 3 hits, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB and 6 K. Zach Olson and Tyler Arnold paced the offense hitting one and two in the order respectively. Olson was 1-3 with a BB, 2 R, and 2 RBI, while Arnold was 2-4 with 2 R and 3 RBI’s. After a much needed day off to rest, recover and catch up on school the boys will be back at Lloyd Nolan Yard on Tuesday. This team knows they have a lot to work on, but they also have a ton of potential. If they can work out some of the kinks, and get a little more consistent this team is going to be very successful. With no break in the weather in the foreseeable future, all work will be done inside. The next scheduled games will be March 16 and 17th against Blue Mountain CC and Walla Walla CC.
