The PBA Varsity team had stops in Pendleton, Oregeon and Walla Walla, Washington over the weekend. The boys picked up their first win of the season, but small mistakes were the story of the 1-3 record on the trip. After a tough opening stretch, the team will enjoy a weekend off before heading back out for their last weekend of non-conference. There are positives to build on, a good stretch of practice and time to heal up some injuries and the boys should be ready to head into the CCBC conference schedule.
In game one of the doubleheader on Saturday the team took on Blue Mountain Community College. PBA jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, it would all be for not though as Blue Mountain came back with a 7 run inning in the bottom of the 6th. The game would end up an 11-10 loss for PBA and a tough way to start the weekend. The boys did pump out 13 hits, and Kyle Poapst had his best outing of the season pitching into the 6th inning and giving up only 1 earned run. As has been the case on several occasions so far this season, one mistake has led to a big inning and those innings can be very difficult to come back from.
Sunday in Walla Walla, the varsity boys were able to get the “monkey off their back” and pick up the first win of the season. A 19-9 offensive outburst was much-needed, and it was a top to bottom team effort. 17 hits, 9 walks, 4 strikeouts and only 1 error on defense was the recipe to getting that first win of the year. Willy Diaz hit 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI in the game, Levi Pellet hit a grand slam and Matt Kohle got the win pitching 5 innings in relief of starter, Jake Anderson. Seven of the nine starters had multiple hits in the game. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t take both games of the doubleheader and had to head home with a 1-3 weekend.
The Varsity team will have this weekend off, but will certainly be at the yard getting their work in. The weather in Lethbridge has been fantastic of late, and they should be able to get most of their practice done on-field. The next action for the Varsity team will be March 14th when they take on Columbia Basin Community College.

The Junior Varsity team were able to kick off their season on Friday, February 28th at Lloyd Nolan Yard. There is not much better than February baseball after the last couple of springs we’ve had. The JV team took on the Vauxhall Jets going 1-1 in the doubleheader. The win was a dramatic comeback with 5 runs in the last inning to walk off the Jets. The JV boys will be back in action against Vauxhall this weekend, weather pending. Stay tuned to social media for updates.
