CCBC Championship Day 3 Recap

Final Scores

#5 U of C 4 - #4 VIBI 2
#3 OC 5 - #5 U of C 2
#1 TRU 4 - #2 PBA 3

Action opened up at noon from Spitz Stadium with #4 VIBI (2-1) taking the field against the #5 U of C Dinos (0-2). The Dinos came into the game desperate for a win to keep them alive in tournament. They sent righty Jeff Peach to the mound while VIBI would send right hander Steve McKinnon to the mound. The scoring opened in the 2nd inning as McKinnon lost the strike zone briefly and the Dinos plated three runs to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Mariners first offense (and first hit) wouldn't come until the bottom of the fourth inning when a couple of free passes along with a bunt base hit would load the bases leading to two VIBI runs on a hit batter and a ground out. The run scoring ground out could have broke open the game for the Mariners if not for a great defensive play by Dinos 1B Wylie Johnston. With the score 3-2 headed to the 5th, Steve McKinnon's day would finally end after a leadoff walk made way for Manager Jordan Blundell to go to RHP Austin Penner.  The Dinos would add a run on a 2 out RBI double by Dakota Upton to make the score 4-2. Dinos starter Jeff Peach would work into the 6th inning; the Mariners would put runners on 2nd and 3rd but Peach would leave them where they stood as the score remained 4-2 headed to the 7th inning. The Dinos handed the ball to their tournament opening starter Riley Schaaf and he would navigate the 7th around two base hits to secure the win for the Dinos. The loss leaves VIBI at a 2-2 mark for the round robin play and Calgary goes to 1-2 with one game left to play. The result leaves both teams in contention for Sunday's playoff spots.

Game two would be a "loser goes home" scenario as #3 Okanagan College (1-2) and #5 U of C (1-2) wrapped up their round robin schedule. The Coyotes would send lefty Zach Burlon to the mound and the Dinos would counter with right hander Tanner Ring. The Dinos opened up the scoring in the 1st inning, led by a Miles Hunter leadoff triple followed by a groundout by Colin Rintoul to score him. The Coyotes would answer right away as they would plate two in the bottom half of the first on two hits and a Calgary error. Errors would continue to sting Calgary as they allowed two more runs to score in the bottom half of the 3rd, bringing the score to 5-2 after three innings. Ring would exit the game in the third inning making way for the Dinos bullpen which would keep the Coyotes at bay giving the Dinos a chance, but they would fail to score, ending their season with a 5-2 loss at the hands of the University of Calgary. The Okanagan Coyotes would await the finish of the TRU-PBA game to determine the playoff seedings.

The final game of the round robin would pit the tournament favorites in a game that would see the winner head right into Sunday's 6:00 PM championship final. TRU and PBA added another chapter to their long and dramatic rivalry under drizzly, cool conditions on Saturday night before an excited crowd at Spitz Stadium. The team's did not disappoint as this year's #1 v. #2 round robin matchup would end in on walk off hit with the Wolfpack ultimately prevailing 4-3. The Wolfpack sent left hander Jake Hein to the mound, a pitcher who has been a thorn in the side for the Dawgs the past couple years. He would again stymie the Dawgs and it appeared he was well on his way to wrapping up a complete game shutout effort for the Wolfpack with a 3-0 lead and low pitch count headed to the 7th. However for the second night in a row the Dawgs would create some late inning theatre and they would ultimately tie the ballgame at three apiece. The three runs that scored were truly a bag of tricks as a hit batter, single, and error would put the Dawgs in a position to steal the game. Nolan Levy (pinch running for Symington) would plate the game tying run with 2 outs on a wild pitch and the Dawgs had chased Hein after 6 2/3 very good innings. Jason Tripp would record the final out of the inning via strikeout and the game would head the bottom of the 7th. This is where the game would end as Wolfpack 2B Tony Tabor hit a ball deep to the right field corner bringing in SS Brenden Reid who would slide in just ahead of the Dawgs relay and take the game. With that TRU advances to the championship final Sunday at 6:00 PM and the Dawgs have lots of work to do if they hope to keep the CCBC Championship trophy for a 4th consecutive year.
